По сути можно говорить, что православная вера, казачья вольница и государево служение были (да и во многом остаются) основой самоидентификации российского казачества.

Cossacks-Orthodox armies

Великую силу Православия в полной мере осознавал первый устроитель Руси после татарского нашествия Св. Благоверный князь Александр Невский. Именно он обеспечил духовную связь казачества и русского государства. Поднепровский Переславль был почти стёрт с лица земли, и в 1261г. Александр Невский добился разрешения Хана Берке, чтобы резиденция Переславского епископа была перенесена в столицу Орды-Сарай, возникла Сарайско-Подонская епархия. Из самого названия видно, что значительная часть паствы жила на Дону, а подчинялась епархия митрополиту всея Руси, резиденция которого в 1299г. была перенесена из Киева во Владимир, а потом в Москву. Таким образом, через церковь установились связи казаков с новым центром русских земель.
